This afternoon, Matt and I went on a ‘sensory journey like no other’ at Ribby Hall Spa. And oh my goodness, why have I never done this before?!
The aqua thermal journey is a two hour experience where you sit and relax in a range of different sauna/steam type rooms, which helps to relax aching muscles and cleanse and rejuvenate your skin. It can also help to improve circulation and boost your immune system; it would be a fab place to go if you are full of a cold and feeling a bit sorry for yourself!
I have read about these types of experiences before and never really understood their appeal. Well now I totally get it and I’m itching to book in another session!
At 4pm we arrived at the spa hotel, which is set in beautiful grounds, but as it was raining I didn’t manage to get a decent photograph. There was plenty of parking and it was well sign posted. So far so good…!
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but as soon as I walked into the reception area I knew I was going to enjoy my afternoon. The staff were very helpful and explained how we should spend about 10 minutes in each ‘room’ and gave us a little map to follow.
The changing rooms were luxurious and lockers were free of charge to use. We were also provided with complimentary towels, a bath robe and flip flops.
For obvious reasons, I was unable to take photographs inside the spa so I have copied a few from the Ribby Hall website.
Outside each room, there was a description of what that experience was designed to do and whether you should have a hot (or cold!) shower afterwards, before heading into the next room. Each room increased in temperature as you went along and you could take a dip in the pool whenever you wanted to.
We followed all the steps in order (although you are free to use the rooms in any order you wish) and I even braved the cold ‘plunge bucket’ shower and rubbed myself in ice!! I know that doesn’t sound particularly relaxing but it felt soooo good afterwards!
Whilst relaxing on the heated loungers, we both said we could easily have fallen asleep. I think having children really makes you appreciate the times when you can sit down and do absolutely nothing.
We finished our experience in the outdoor hot tub; it was raining but this added to the experience and I think I preferred that to if it had been a boiling hot day.
At 6 o’clock we went to get changed. I made good use of the Elemis shampoo and conditioner and loved the fact they had GHD hair dryers and straighteners in the dressing room area.
We had booked dinner in The Orangery at 6.30pm. Well, well, well… The food was exquisite.
My mouth is watering now just thinking about it!
Everything was presented beautifully and every mouthful was bursting with flavour. I cannot fault it in any way.
Even the wine was delicious; the best wine I’ve had in a long time!
All in all, I can 100% recommend Ribby Hall Spa and hope I am lucky enough to return again soon. It really was a fantastic date and not something that we have ever done before. Much more intimate than the usual meal and drinks date night and extremely relaxing – I’m sure we will both sleep well tonight!
Have you ever done an experience like this before? Give it a go for your next date night!
Thanks so much for reading and thank you to Hex Mum Blog for hosting Blogtober17!
The aqua thermal journey and dinner is available Monday to Thursday and costs £52pp. We were given this as a gift voucher from some very good friends – what a fantastic idea for a present!
